Range Rover: The Car of Choice

If you were watching the christening of Princess Charlotte at the start of July, you may have noticed that the youngest member of the Royal Family was safely transported in a Range Rover. This is no surprise, as the Queen and other members of British royalty have been keen to drive and be transported in this particular vehicle since the 1970’s, when the original ‘classic’ models were first rolling off the production line.

The Range Rover has continuously evolved since the first V8 engine, 4 wheel drive vehicle headed onto the road. Built in Solihull, the design has always focused on bringing off road practicality with on road styling. It is a vehicle that can deliver power, control, comfort and driveability on the toughest terrain, yet still look the part on city streets.

Off Road Functionality

To prove its credentials in the early years, the Range Rover took on some of the world’s toughest driving challenges. In the 1970’s a Range Rover completed the 18,000 mile Trans-American expedition, was driven in the Sahara Desert Rally and then completed both the London to Sydney marathon and the 1979 Paris-Dakar race.

Incorporating Advanced Technology

It may have been an impressive vehicle from the start, but work has never stopped on its development. In the 1980’s the new features included a four door models, an automatic version, the introduction of a diesel engine and ABS brakes. In the 1990’s a long wheelbase model, 4.2 litre engine model came onto the market and both Automatic Air Suspension and Electronic Traction Control became features of the Range Rover.

At the start of the new millennium, there was considerable focus on exceeding expectations on luxury and comfort. New models included satellite navigation, TV and Thin Film Transistor virtual dials. This technology is now widely available, but Range Rover led the way with this modern in-car technology.

The fourth generation of Range Rovers are now available for purchase or hire. There have been considerable efforts to make these latest models lighter, faster and more fuel efficient. This has been achieved in part by combining advanced aerodynamics and aluminium bodywork. In addition, work on refinement has continued.
