Having Fun at The Seaside
January 9, 2016 3:09 pmUnless you are passionate about bracing winds, sea spray or dramatic photography, there can be little to attract you to British shores at this time of year. The empty beaches can feel desolate in the cold winter air and even the most hardened dog walkers don’t hang around for long.
As soon as we start to see the early signs of bright sunny days in the spring, things begin to change. It seems that we are all naturally drawn to the sea and the occasional warm spell in March or April results in many people heading straight for the beach. Everyone has their favourite spots to head to, with picnic blankets, windbreaks or buckets and spades in tow.
Simple Pleasures
A day at the beach can provide real quality time for all the family. It is a place where simple pleasures are enjoyed and appreciated. Children can be kept happy for hours without an electronic device in sight. From kite flying, rock pooling and jumping the waves, to games of catch, burying dad or collecting shells, a day can be filled without the need to pay extortionate entrance fees.
Each resort has its own attractions, from peaceful havens for wildlife and cliff top walks, to crazy golf and theme parks. Through the main tourist season there are also many special events being held all around the British coastline, with a wide appeal to all ages and interests.
Accommodation options are also broad; you can pitch your tent in a local campsite or splash out on a room in a grand Victorian beach side hotel. One of the most popular places to stay is on a well-equipped caravan site. Many give you the chance to bring your own caravan, either for a one off visit or the entire season, or to hire a caravan for the duration of your holiday.
Yorkshire Coast
One region of England which boasts a varied coastline is Yorkshire. Golden beaches combined with cliffs and coves, traditional fishing villages, lively resorts and many annual events have been attracting holiday makers to the Yorkshire coast for centuries. In the early days of rail travel, Scarborough and Bridlington were top destinations and they still hold appeal for family holidays today.
Scarborough
Beyond the beach, Scarborough is home to a medieval castle, motorcycle racing, a number of parks and gardens, the RSPB site at Bempton Cliffs, a cricket festival and of course Scarborough Fair. This is a really family friendly resort, with plenty to keep everyone happy and entertained.
Whitby
The cobbled streets and fishermen’s cottages in this beautiful resort are the perfect backdrop for a holiday. Fishing boats can still be spotted out at sea and you can pick up a fresh fish supper, either from off the boat or in one of the local restaurants. Famous as the home of Captain Cook and because the gothic Whitby Abbey was the inspiration for Dracula, Whitby attracts people for many different reasons. Returning with a piece of Whitby jet is a must.
Other Top Yorkshire Resorts
The 5 mile beach at Filey makes it a popular tourist resort and it is also the host of annual Edwardian and Fishing festivals. Bridlington’s beaches, harbour and golf course make it a place where people return time and time again, whilst the chance of uncovering Jurassic fossils on Robin Hood’s Bay provides hours of entertainment for enthusiasts of all ages.
