Roundhay Park Puts Leeds in the Spotlight
November 20, 2016 9:14 amAt the end of November, the 10 acres of land that form Roundhay Park will become a spectacular winter attraction. It is estimated that around 40,000 lightbulbs will be used to create a collection of 30 lantern displays around the park.
The installations have been created in China, where such lantern displays are a popular family attraction to mark the Chinese New Year. They have been carefully packaged and transported over to the UK by a Chinese business man, who wanted to bring the same experience to the people of Yorkshire.
With the nights drawing in and the days getting colder, Roundhay Park, like any other outdoor attraction typically has far fewer visitors during the winter months. This exhibition is expected to reverse this trend and provide a magical attraction that will compliment other festivities as the end of 2016 draws closer.
In addition to the light displays, an outdoor ice skating rink and mini fun fair will be installed in this Leeds park. The attractions will be open to the public from 25 November until 2 January and a percentage of the money raised will be donated to the local Jane Tomlinson Appeal. Whilst many cities chose to host German style Christmas markets at this time of year, the illuminated lanterns offers something a little different for Leeds residents and visitors.
Treetop Adventure
Roundhay Park is also the focus of attention for local counsellors, who have been considering plans by Go Ape to invest in a treetop climbing and aerial zip wire area as a permanent feature of the park. This forms part of proposals to improve a number of attractions including the Temple Newsam City Farm and New Enclosures at Lotherton Hall’s Tropical World.
As public land, there are many local residents who are against the installation of a commercial attraction at Roundhay Park. On the other side of the debate, many residents welcome the idea, as it will provide an added attraction for the city, which could encourage more tourists to the area, as well as offering great facilities for residents.
Legacy Fund
Another potential boost to the area is the opportunity for cultural organisations to bid for a share of a £15million legacy fund for the north of England. A bid from Bradford to host the Great Exhibition of the North was shortlisted, but unfortunately not successful, however the city and others in the North could benefit in other ways, as funding has been set aside to support organisations that showcase the creative, cultural spirit of the north. What new projects, attractions and ideas could be in store?
