Secret Britain

The BBC series is once again stirring up interest in the hidden gems that can be discovered throughout the counties of Great Britain. It will inspire many to plan day trips and weekends away to experience some of the sights of interest that are visited in the programme. We may also be more inclined to explore our local area in search of points of historic or natural interest.

Yorkshire

Every county in Britain has unique features to celebrate, but as the largest county Yorkshire has plenty to offer, no matter what your interest.

Cities

Starting with the urban areas, there are cities with industrial heritage such as Sheffield. There are those with historic importance including the walled city of York. Historic Sites

Beyond the urban areas, there are a wide variety of sites which are a delight for those with an interest in history. Aldborough Roman Site, north of York and Leeds is one such example. For more recent history the York Cold War Bunker is a shelter created in the 1960s to protect a chosen few from nuclear attack.

Seaside Towns

The coastal region of Yorkshire includes fishing communities, sandy beaches and a number of popular holiday destinations. The harbour port and unique character of Whitby has made it popular with tourists, Scarborough was one of the original holiday destinations on the East coast and Bridlington is another resort that attracts plenty of visitors. Between these towns are a host of villages that all benefit from beautiful beaches and stunning sea views.

Natural Yorkshire

Although it is often considered an industrial region, nature is still in charge across much of Yorkshire. There are vast areas of rolling hills and remote moor land that provide stunning views and a real escape from the realities of everyday life. These included an epic climb to the top of Whitestone Cliff for a breath taking view and a pint at the remote Tarn Hill Inn after a challenging bike ride. There is a wealth of other sites of interest to visit across the rugged North York Moors.

Outdoor Pursuits
