The Caravan Owners Guide to Leeds
May 4, 2016 1:30 pmWith a broad selection of caravan sites throughout Leeds and the surrounding areas, the Yorkshire city is becoming a popular destination for caravan owners across the UK. Each of which set-out to explore the cities animal filled Roundhay Park and historic Kirkstall Abbey with their caravan in tow.
Within this article we’ll be exploring the variety of natural and built landmarks Leeds has to offer, beyond those already discussed above. Ensuring that your itinerary is packed full of excitement for the whole family, whether you’re visiting for the weekend or an extended stay.
1. Leeds City Square
Whilst a ‘city square’ may not be the typical addition to your itinerary, Leeds City Square’s array of statues and grand buildings are certain to impress.
Despite being bombed by the Luftwaffe during World War II, Leeds City Square has stood the test of time and attracted thousands of visitors per day since it was first completed in 1899. Around the square you’ll find numerous statues of reputable local people and eight nymphs; each sculpted by Alfred Drury.
Overlooking these statues, you’ll find an array of buildings. One of which is the Queens Hotel, a Grade II listed building designed by W.Curtis Green and W.H. Hamlyn in the 1930’s. In 2003 the hotel undertook a £10 million makeover, although, the external architecture of the building has seen little change.
2. Thackray Medical Museum
Located in the former Leeds Union Workhouse, the Thackray Medical Museum aims to take visitors on a journey of discovery as their selection of galleries explore the world of medicine throughout the ages. These interactive galleries contain over 47,000 objects dating back as far as the Roman times.
Once you’ve explored the entire museum, the Thackray Medical Museum is also a wonderful location to have lunch. The café has a gorgeous selection of tempting snacks and a handful of Yorkshire favourites, including handmade sandwiches and bistro meals.
3. Temple Newsam
Similarly to Thackray Medical Museum, Temple Newsam is a historic building. However, this Tudor house does not play host to a museum, but instead an array of rooms decorated with beautifully treasures dating back over 500 years.
Owned by Leeds City Council, the West Yorkshire house and its grounds are open to the public; making for a cheap yet adventurous day out for the whole family. On-site parking also allows you to park both your tow car and caravan, should you visit the house en route to your caravan site of choice.
4. Meanwood Valley Urban Farm
Goats, lambs and rabbits are just a handful of the animals on show at Meanwood Valley Urban Farm, located a short distance outside of Leeds city centre. All of which are certain to keep the younger members of the family occupied throughout the day.
The farm, which was first operated from two old caravans, is a 24 acre site that continues its role as a working farm. Meanwood Valley Urban Farm also provides a variety of services to the local community in Leeds, including educational events.
Each of these landmarks, which are a popular choice among local residents and tourists, will keep you and your family busy throughout your stay in Leeds. The majority of the locations above also have on-site parking for both your tow car and caravan, assuming you intend to stay for short periods of time.
