Tow Car Hire

Traditionally anybody looking for a reliable yet affordable towing vehicle would resort to a hatchback from the likes of Skoda or Renault. In recent years, however, these and other big names in the car world have introduced affordable 4×4 vehicles superior to their hatchback predecessors. At the same time, car manufacturers with 4×4 in their blood, such as Land Rover, have widened their range of vehicles to provide an option for every towing requirement.

In this article we’ll be exploring the top tow cars on the market today. We’ll take a look at what’s under the bonnet, the level of stability provided and of course the price tag accompanying them. Allowing you to choose the perfect tow car to buy or hire for your next trip, whether it’s to tow a caravan, horse trailer or boat.

Land Rover Discovery

If you’re towing a heavy load, such as a caravan, there is no better vehicle than the Land Rover Discovery. Since its inception in 1989, the prestigious car has become renowned for it’s brute force and unchallenged stability. All of which is a result of the Discovery’s  V6 engine, four-wheel drive and impressive turning circle of 11.45m. In fact, the Land Rover Discovery is one of the most decorated cars in What Car’s Tow Car Awards, coming out in top when put against both the BMW X5 and Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The Land Rover Discovery does of course come with a premium price tag in excess of £40,000. However, if you’re an avid caravanner or attend equestrian shows regularly with your horse in tow, it will surely become an invaluable piece of kit.

Ford Ranger

Unlike the Land Rover, the Ford Range comes from the United States and is specifically designed to be used for towing heavy loads in excess of 3,5000kg, according to Ford’s own website.

The latest generation Ford Ranger also features a new Electric Power Assisted Steering system, allowing for the highest level of control and ease when driving. That system is at its best when combined with the Ranger’s selectable 4×4, which allows you to choose either 4×2 or 4×4 dependent upon your terrain.

The Ford Ranger also comes in at up to half the price of the Land Rover Discovery, with it setting you back approximately £20,000. Leaving you with pennies to spend decorating the interior of your caravan or looking after your cherished horse.

Misubishi L200

The final tow car to make its way onto our list is the Misubishi L200, which has made a name for itself for having the best total load capacity on the market today. Whilst Ford and Volkswagen maintain load capacities of around 3,800kg, the Misubishi L200 prides itself on a total load capacity of 4,090kg. This makes it ideal for any towing requirement, including a boat.

Should you be towing lighter loads, such as a trailer, the fuel efficiency of the L200 is certain to impress. In fact, unlike many 4×4 vehicles on the market today, the Misubishi L200 has an incredible MPG of 42.8. Ultimately saving you hundreds of pounds throughout the year. Once you consider it only costs approximately £20,000, that’s value for money.

Found the Tow Car for You?

The Land Rover Discovery, Ford Ranger and Misubishi L200 are all incredible vehicles for towing any load. However, with each of them setting you back over £20,000, you may struggle to justify the buy if you’ll only be putting it to use a few times throughout the year.

It’s because of this that caravanners, horse owners and boat owners across Leeds choose to hire a tow car from 4×4 Vehicle Hire. Our range of prestigious vehicles, each with four-wheel drive, are certain to meet your requirements. Allowing you to head to the coast with the assurance that you’ll get there without any headaches.
